On the sewing machine

I spend a few hours on the sewing machine last night and this evening.  I found this super cute notepad cover and just wanted to see if I could make it.  Turns out that yes I could.  I found it here http://thecottagehome.blogspot.com/2011/06/fabric-portfolio-and-notepad-holder.html
This is one of the blogs I read every single day, I love the cottage mama.  Her blog is full of wonderful things to make. Please check out her site.

For all the exact directions please click the link above, she gives very easy to follow instructions.
                                                  Here is how I started:
I believe the hardest part of this pattern was picking out which colors to use where.  It calls for 5 different coordinating fabrics, I am sure that you can use just one if you'd like or any variation. Whatever works for you.

The next part...start stitching.  I love sitting up at the sewing machine at night after everyone else has gone to bed.  This is my quiet time, time that I don't have to be doing anything else. So this is the out side.~~~>>
I love ORANGE!  This fabric was screaming my name at Hobby Lobby yesterday.  It is just a fat quarter bundle so it had all 5 of the fabrics that I needed.  All orange in one way or another.  Yippee!

I was having such a great time I forgot to take step by step photos...so here in this picture is the outside, the inside and the pocket pieces.  I can see it coming together already. I can not say enough that if you want to make one of these for yourself, visit the cottage mama's site.  Her photos and instructions are wonderful.

Like I said a second ago, sew happy makes for far less photos that expected.  Here is the outside of my finished cover~~~>>  I had the button in a big bag of buttons in the craft box, I did stop by the local dollar store today to buy an orange ponytail holder so that my closure would match the rest of the project (its orange...hehehe)
Here is how the inside looks, I believe her finished product looks better than mine does, but it is after all the first one I have ever made.  I like it, there are a few things that I will do differently if I make any more, there is always room for improvement.  This is the back of the outside.~~~~~>>
Valorie and Brittnie have both already tried to claim it, but no.  This one is mine even with all it's imperfections.  I love it.  Mostly because it has lots of orange on it  :)
Quilting is really the extent of my sewing ability.  I have never really tried to do much more than that.  So this little project is helping me to explore all the other things that I can find to make on my own.  Next up is a checker game for my girls and a matching game for...well I don't know who it will be for, but it looked like fun to make.  So I am going to try it.

Go dig around in your fabric stash or swing by Hobby Lobby and use the 40% coupon to get you some super cute fabric and try out this pattern.  Or anything that gets you out of the box you're use to sewing in.  It really was lots of fun to see it come together.

Have a great weekend.

Vandalism??

Well I guess you can call it that.  there was no real damages though so maybe it isn't really vandalism after all.  This is what happens when Stephanee gets bored and is looking for something to do.  Be glad we didn't do her idea.  Sitting at dinner she shows a picture of a car completely surrounded by shopping carts, no not just a few...all the carts available I'd guess.  Now I'm all about a prank on someone I know, but a stranger.  well I couldn't be that mean.  So we waved off that idea when my oldest girl...yes the sweet innocent one.  says hey how bout we post it note someones car...someone else says yea how bout Jasons truck and well it was a plan at that point and had to be played out. (poor Jason doesn't stand a chance with Stephanee & I both in his life)    ;-)
the picture above is 2400 post it notes all lovingly suck to his truck.  if u look at it right it seems as if his truck has scales like a fish. (Hehe)  while the original plan was to post them and leave them to find when he got off work (@ 2 am-while we were all home snuggled up and sleeping) that is not what happened.  we really do have hearts and couldn't leave him to clean it all up alone after 12 hours of work. Plus the 4 teenage girls that helped wanted to see his reaction.  With a very convincing phone call from some enlisted help he showed up (running lights & sirens with back up) to find this site. All while 6 giggling girls hid out and watched.  we finally gave ourselves up and took the threats of pay back with a grain of salt (he may get us back but he will never get a rise out of us like we got from him...running hot with back up FUNNY)  the girls felt sorry for him and cleaned up the mess.  Someone who happened to see the mess asked "why?"  someone else said "because they are little girls" talking about our girls. My reply was "well its better than what some teenage girls are doing at 10pm on a Friday night."  The plus side is Steph and I got to make a great silly memory with our girls.  they are growing so quick we may not have very many of those before we're not fun and all they care about is hanging out with boys so we'll take what we can get.

As far as pay backs...I'm waiting  :)

Life is short get out there and make some great crazy memories of your own.
Have a great weekend.

Not an ice cream maker??

Not the best idea  :)

Really I know that the very old butter churn that my dear mother-in-law gave me is not an ice cream maker...but why the heck not?  I am sure that a real ice cream maker is just a chamber for the milk sugar egg and such with an empty space for the ice and ice cream salt so that the ice makes the milk mix super cold yadda...yadda...yadda.  So why could this not work?  I do not have an answer for why it wont work, but trust me when I say it is not the best idea I came up with, just go get a store bought model or just buy ice cream from the store.  Or you can do what I did...when I got tired of turning the churn in the ice and my hands were nearing frost bite (not really, but I don't like for my hands to be cold)  I just put the mixture into a large bowl and stuffed it in the freezer until this evening.  It worked.  Not when I wanted it to but it eventually made ice cream.  We started with making our own root beer.  McCormick sells all kinds of extract and concentrates and root beer flavor is one.  you just boil 1 &1/2 cup of water add 3/4 cup sugar and 1 & 1/2 tsp of the concentrate mix well and add to 1 liter of club soda.  serve over ice.  Britt just loved making her own root beer.  We decided to take it one step further and make our own ice cream and have root beer floats.

All the mess of not having a "real" ice cream maker aside, our floats turned out Super AWESOME.  Stephen is fully aware that we will need to buy a maker so that I can make these often (root beer floats are my favorite way to have ice cream)  Don't mind the Shrek cup but the float inside looks yummy, no?

Well that is all I have for you all today, Its nearing my bed time and I have to work in the morning.  I hope you all try to make your own soon.  I promise no matter the amount of work involved you will love the moment that you hear..."mm mm... mom that is really good, can we do it again."

Makes my heart smile when they are happy.  Love you all, its cold out stay warm.  Have a great weekend.

How did you know how to do that?

yummo...Vanilla Dr Pepper

So it's Thursday night at the Corley house and dad is gone to the fire department.  This happens every week and us girls are always looking for something to fill our evening.  This week was no different except for the fact that momma hasn't been feeling the best and just wants to stay in tonight and not go shopping or visiting or anything really.  My girls hate it when mom is in this kind of stay home mood.  I was hoping to cheer them up a bit. So we make popcorn (using the method from a few post ago)  We love popcorn, everyone likes to put their own topping on which makes it fun.  But we needed something icy cold and yummy to wash down all the salty popcorn.  So I got out the vanilla extract and added a bit to our Dr pepper.  Yep that's right mom knows how to make vanilla Dr Pepper just like at Sonic and QT?    They thought this was great.  We had a good evening in watching a movie while having popcorn and soda.

I went to the store today to pick up a few things for making homemade ice cream and homemade root beer so that we can make floats this evening.  While at the store I grabbed a bottle of cherry extract so that they could make cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper if they want to.
I love sharing my crazy ideas with people, although I am not one to just start a conversation with a stranger but as I was putting the cherry flavor in the cart a lady stopped me and asked what I use that for...
The cherry flavor? I asked  Yes, she said.  "I always see it and the others but never had a reason to buy them"
I told her we might be crazy because you can purchase cherry vanilla flavored sodas but that my girls thought it was the coolest thing ever that mom knew how to make it at home.  She thought it was cool as well and that her kids might like that too.  while in this short amount of time I also shared with her how to make root beer and let her know that we would be making homemade root beer floats with it tonight along with the homemade ice cream...she asked where I lived so that she could come by (joking of course)  But as I was turning to finish my shopping I noticed her put the root beer flavor into her cart.  (It really does taste great.)
I passed this same lady again a couple more times and each time she thanked me for the ideas and even stopped me one last time to make sure she got the right stuff for making the root beer.  I assured her that she did and wished her luck and that I hoped her family would like it as much as we do.

I usually hate going to Wal-mart, the store sucks the life out of me as well as the money from my wallet.  But today was different, I got to share some fun with a stranger and it was great.  I loved the whole experience.  I only wish I had given her my name or blog address or something so that she could read up on all the fun things we do that I share with all of you.
Maybe next time.

Have a great weekend everyone, I'll share more soon.

Must try stain remover!

Stain Remover
AMAZING Stain remover!!
Ok here it is...the best stain remover ever, I had seen this a time of two over on pinterest but never really thought about trying it until Caprice and I had talked about it a bit last week.  She said it worked great and that the stain she tried it on had not worked its way back to the surface(crazy how that it does that sometimes)  Any way I had to try it.

All you have to do is mix 1 part dawn dish washing liquid and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide together and pour on stain and watch it do its magic.
Well you all know me, I never do what the directions say :)  (***This mix was intended for stains on clothing, but I wanted to try it on the floor, it did not bleach the color.  it just cleaned it.***) I didn't change much, except instead of pouring the mix on the stain I put it in a spray bottle I got at Dollar General and sprayed it on the spots on the carpet and then I scrubbed it with a small scrub brush...

Some of you may not believe this but it really does work.  You can call Stephen, as I am sure he thought I was losing my mind (or had already lost it) because when he came home I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the floor with probably the smallest scrub brush in the house, and I was excited that it was working.  I done several spots in the front room floor that night.  With an indoor dog, 2 kids and a husband, we have our fair share of spills and accidents around here.

And with the resulst being so awesome, I started brainstorming ways to do the whole house (starting with just the entry way) borrowed the carpet shampoor from Denise and mixed up about 3 cups of this stuff and put one cup in the soap dispenser on the carpet cleaner.  But before I started with it, I vacumed the floor in the entry way and used my spray bottle on the whole thing, I let it sit on there like that for about 30 minutes to get good and soaked in, the I started using the machine to shampoo the carpet.

I went a bit crazy and did the whole entry way instead of just the high traffic area.  I will be doing another area...hallway yes I think, but not today, I am wore out.  (the carpet cleaner is pretty heavy) So blogging seemed like the logical thing to do after all that hard work :)

Try it out and let me know what you clean with this "magic mixture"
I would love to hear from you.

Have a great weekend!
